Comfort Food

This cold weather fires up my cravings for comfort food.  I miss eating Mom’s yummy casseroles and home baked goods every evening.  Darn, why did I have to grow up?!  There is one childhood comfort food I still enjoy.  Ever since high school when we got our first microwave, my go-to food in times of need is a liquid goo made of melted chocolate chips and peanut butter—don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!
The cats have their own healthier favorites.  Monty craved cantaloupe.  Anytime he caught me slicing one, he’d paw at my arm and rub against me, then jump onto a shelf above where he could claw at my shoulder incessantly until I gave him melon bits.  When I was done, his job was to lick all the empty rinds until they were bone dry.
Jersey is a popcorn fanatic, just like my husband.  Whenever he pops a bowl, it’s a kernel for her and a handful for him.
Frank has a couple of favorite foods.  Alfredo sauce is one.  When he was only a couple of months old he got into an unattended bowl filled with sauce.  After lapping up the whole thing, he bloated to twice his normal size and howled with pain when touched.  One would think that would put him off alfredo for life but it hasn’t seemed to make a difference.  He still shamelessly begs whenever we have it.
Mmm...peanut butter
His other favorite is peanut butter.  When I’m making my favorite comfort food, I have to put a glob of PB onto the counter top for him to eat.  Yes, we do wash the counter afterwards.  It amazes me that he can suck it up in a split-second without his mouth sticking shut. That's Frank for you--full of mystery.
Do you suppose all God’s creatures crave special treats?  I wonder what hedgehogs crave? Probably meal worms or something else none of us would touch.
