Adventures in Plant Watering

Water-loving Toby in the Birdbath

We had our first frost advisory a few weeks back so I frantically found indoor homes for my potted plants.  I have a hard time condemning them to death after nurturing them all summer.  As a reward, many bloom all winter long.

The move indoors adds watering to my weekend chores.  Plant watering happens to be the #1 favorite spectator sport of the cats.  Most eventually outgrow its fascination but Toby is still enthralled.  As far as spectator sports go, this one is quite interactive.  Toby uses his paws and nose to redirect the water onto his face, the wall, the window--anyplace that is not the plant.  This process is repeated at each pot throughout the house.  As he thoroughly enjoyed his water play, it occurred to me that perhaps I rush through my mundane tasks far too often.  Rather than finding simple pleasure in that chore—inhaling the verdant, earthy aroma of soil soaking up life-giving water--I hurry to finish so I can move on to the next task.  It’s time to slow down and savor the work God sets before me.  Toby surely does.
